The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is a very important part of our relationship with God.  We receive part of Him when we ask forgiveness of our sins and accept Jesus as Lord.  If you have not done this, please see our Prayer for Salvation tab on this website.  However, there is another, more important way, to receive more of The Holy Spirit.  When we are baptized in The Holy Spirit, or ask for more of Him, we receive the same power and authority Jesus had when He was on this earth.  We are able to do the miracles Jesus did, because we have the same Spirit He had; The Holy Spirit.

Having The Holy Spirit will bring us into a closer relationship with God.  He is intently asking us to accept this free gift.  We encourage you to watch our video, Asking for All of God, released on September 2, 2022.  It explains this in further detail.  In it, there is an example of God holding a beautifully wrapped present that He is so excited for us to open.  That is the gift of The Holy Spirit.  Many people only look at the present but are not willing to open it to see the amazing  contents inside.  Here are some simple answers to the basic questions people often ask.

Who is The Holy Spirit, and what does He do?

Jesus explains this answer in John 14:26.  This is the amplified version.

  • John 14:26 AMP
  • 26 But the [a]Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will help you remember everything that I have told you.

Where does The Holy Spirit show up in the Bible?

He was on the people in the Old Testament, such as the prophets, but He was not able to stay in them.  When Jesus was baptized in the water by John the Baptist, The Holy Spirit came to dwell in Him.  Jesus was filled with The Holy Spirit, and now we can be, too.

  • Mark 1:10-11 ESV
  • 10 And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son;[a]with you I am well pleased.”

Why do I need The Holy Spirit?

When we have the baptism of the Holy Spirit, just as Jesus had, we are now able to do even greater things than Jesus did on earth.

  • John 14:12 ESV
  • 12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.

Jesus said this and was speaking of how The Holy Spirit will reside on and in us and now we can have what He had.

How do I ask for the baptism of The Holy Spirit?

This part is as simple as praying for salvation.  When we ask with a pure heart, earnestly seeking what we want to obtain, He will grant our request.  We need to simply believe and receive all God has for us.  Here is an example of a prayer you can repeat, but anything you say from your heart will be perfect.

“God, I want to be closer to You.  Please come and baptize me with The Holy Spirit.  I want to experience everything Jesus did while He was on earth.  I accept this precious gift from You right now.  Thank You.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen!”

There is another amazing quality we have when we receive this baptism.  We are able to communicate with God in a special language.  This is referred to as speaking in tongues.  This happened to the believers on a day called Pentecost, as they were themselves praying for more of God.  Acts 2 explains all about this in greater detail.  Here is a specific scripture about speaking in tongues.

  • Acts 2:4 ESV
  • And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Speaking in tongues is not something to be afraid of.  It is a beautiful way to speak to God in His own language.  He will reveal more of Himself to us when we pray this way.  We may not understand the words or syllables coming out of our mouth, but rest assured, we are praying perfectly to God.
